History

The University of Ilorin is part of the institutions of higher learning established by a decree of the Federal Military Government in August, 1975. The University commenced as an affiliated college of the University of Ibadan in September 1975 at the mini campus. Academic activities started in October, 1976 with the three foundation faculties: Arts, Education and Sciences. On October 1st, 1977, University College attained full autonomous status of a University. Hitherto, there are fifteen (15) Faculties, Agriculture, Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Communication and Information Sciences, Education, Engineering and Technology, Law, Life Sciences, Management Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, with eighty-eight (88) Academic departments. The Faculty of Environmental Sciences is counted as additional to the existing Faculties in the University.

The establishment of the faculty passed through the approval process of the appropriate committees of the University and the University Senate. This is accompanied with an approved budget for 2013/2014 academic session. The budget for the faculty of Environmental Sciences is published on pages 197 to 202 of the Approved University Budget 2013/2014 Book. University of Ilorin Senate approved that the faculty is to take-off with five (5) Professional Departments, namely Architecture, Estate Management, Quantity Surveying, Surveying and Geo-informatics and Urban and Regional Planning.  Five (5) Departments in which Estate Management was included took off in 2013/2014 Academic Session. The department has four tenure of headship since its inception: Dr. M.T.A. Ajayi, pioneer head (Sept 2013- Dec 2015), ESV N.A. Bello, second head (Dec 2015- March 2017), Late ESV T.A. Ibrahim third (March 2017- January 2018), Dr. N.A. Bello, fourth Dr. A.S. Adeogun Fifth head on full time (March 2020 – March 2022), ESV W.A. Durosinmi Sixth head on full time (March 2022 till date).
